110mph car accident on Rainier Avenue in Renton, WA July 14, 2011 At around 3:45 pm, Renton police and fire crews were sent to the 400 block of Rainier Avenue North at the U-Haul store in response to a single vehicle collision. They found a car that had crossed into oncoming traffic, struck a lamp pole and wrapped around a tree. When police arrived the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. A bystander suffered burn injuries during a rescue attempt to pull the victim from the vehicle and was transported to a local hospital by fire department units. Renton police are still investigating and have some idea that speed was a factor in the accident. A second vehicle may have been street racing against this car. Rainier Avenue North was closed to traffic in both directions from South 115th Street to Airport Way. The closure will last into Thursday evening. This location along Rainier Avenue has a slight dip and bend. Many cars that have been driving fast here have lost control. In 1996 a Renton High School student street racing in a VW Jetta lost control here and lost his life.
