Tri Met testing out their newly refurbished ex-Alaska RDC Budd cars on the PNWR line between Beaverton to Wilsonville. Occasional stops were made along the way.
Tri Met's RDC Budd Cars racing through the fog after dark (HD)Feb 01, 2012
On my way home from a packing job in Tigard, I heard the all too familiar sound of the RDC's racing south to Wilsonville. I drove to the Tigard TC and within minutes they returned, on their way back to Beaverton TC. The fog was intense, but it made the surrounding lights look bigger. The K5LA's on each of these units have not been swapped out, yet.

Abandoned B&M Budd RDC's Outside of BostonFeb 09, 2012
A look inside the derelict Boston and Maine Budd RDC's outside of the Boston Engine Terminal taken a while back. Unfortunately these cars have been subjected to a lot of vandalism over the years. Note, I had permission to film in these cars. This video is from a while back, sorry for the shaky camera work.
RDC Rail Diesel Car Detroit Diesel 6-110 engine and Westinghouse 3-YC air compressor start-upDec 09, 2011
In this video you'll hear the Detroit Diesel 6-110 engine and Westinghouse Air Brake Company 3-YC air compressor both start-up and cut-off on former B&O RR RDC #9913. This unit, which is leased from the B&O RR Museum, is currently operating for the Fayette Central RR, in Uniontown, PA. See:fayettecentralrailroad.com The distinctive sounds of the Westinghouse 3-YC air compressor is heard when the engine is turned on, then when the engine shuts down, the compressor still pumps for a few seconds. Today it is hard to find this model compressor on RDC's, locomotives and rapid transit cars. Rapid transit and commuter rail systems in NYC, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Boston, Stockholm & Tokyo-Japan, used this compressor until they retired the cars or replaced them with WABCO D-4 compressors. Some examples exist today on museum rolling stock in NYC, Cleveland, Stockholm and Tokyo, or at trolley museums in the northeast. Buenos Aires, Argentina still operates former Tokyo subway cars, with these loud compressors. You can see various videos of these cars on Youtube when you put SUBTE, Line B. For those who remember these sounds, it will bring lots of memories.
New Haven Railroad in the 1950's PreviewJan 18, 2012
New Haven Railroad in the 1950's is vintage footage shot by Kent Cochrane all on 16mm film. He was a Navy photographer during WWII and did outstanding work on the New Haven. Original show was about an hour, but we have added another 15-17 minutes of a Cape Cod trip in RDC cars to this show. Lots of great diesel and RDC action, plus the last steamer 3016 in action. Again this is just a preview, and in fact its the one we did when the video was released around 1990. for more go to our video website.

My first ride aboard the RDC's of TriMetFeb 04, 2012
Taking my first ride aboard Tri Met's refurbished vintage RDC units aquired from the Alaska RR. In my opinion, they are quieter, more spacious, and have larger seats then the DMU's. And the lead coach has a bike compartment that can hold multiple bikes. These units were originally built sometime in the 1950's, and for me riding them is like taking a step back in time.
