First there was a stabbing at about 7:30pm March 31st 2010 in the 4600 block of North Magnolia Ave. Then about 45 minutes after that a car police tried to stop enters the street. The car rams it's way off the street exiting via sidewalks. A lot of the neighborhood was out talking about the stabbing and enjoying otherwise good weather. It's a wonder nobody was hit. It is dusk on a February Tuesday, and the evening rush is underway here at CTA's Sheridan 'L' station on the border of the Wrigleyville and Uptown neighbourhoods. This station was built by the Northwestern Elevated Railroad Co. in 1900, enlarged in 1916, and the station house was renovated again in 1930. In 2002, public art was added to the station, but the platforms, canopies, stairs, etc, have hardly changed in the 111 years Sheridan has been serving passengers. The tracks here make a very sharp 'S' curve, with the platforms on the straight bit in the middle of the 'S'. The first and last cars of an 8-car train are tilted quite a bit, with a gap between the doors and the platforms, when berthed at the station on the inner tracks (used by the Red Line north to Howard and south to 95th/Dan Ryan). Purple Line Express trains (to the Loop or Linden Ave in Wilmette) pass through on the outer express tracks, even though the platforms serve the inner *and* outer tracks (the station was built this way when the 'L' operated local and express service on the same lines, a practice ended in 1949. Occasionally, trains will serve the outer platforms when there is a reroute, and Purple Line Expresses stop at the outer platforms for service to weekday night Cubs home games (Wrigley Field is a few blocks to the south, and in 2003, the Cubs "adopted" the station, sponsoring its maintenance and upkeep).
