Built and operated by industrial gases company BOC, a member of The Linde Group, the venture is the result of a partnership between Honda, BOC and economic development company Forward Swindon. The new station is open to anyone developing or using hydrogen-powered vehicles. It can fill vehicles at both 350 bar and 700 bar, the two standard filling pressures adopted by the world's major vehicle manufacturers. A hydrogen vehicle is a vehicle that uses hydrogen as its onboard fuel for motive power. Hydrogen vehicles include hydrogen fueled space rockets, as well as automobiles and other transportation vehicles. The power plants of such vehicles convert the chemical energy of hydrogen to mechanical energy either by burning hydrogen in an internal combustion engine, or by reacting hydrogen with oxygen in a fuel cell to run electric motors. Widespread use of hydrogen for fueling transportation is a key element of a proposed hydrogen economy. Toyota to open first pipeline-fed hydrogen station in USOct 02, 2011
Toyota and Shell Oil have teamed up to start to the first hydrogen fueling station in the US fed directly from an active industrial hydrogen pipeline. Along with Toyota and Shell, Air Products, South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) and the Department of Energy (DOE) are also involved in the creation of this first station. The facility will provide hydrogen for the Toyota fuel cell hybrid demonstration program vehicles as well as other manufacturers' fuel cell vehicle fleets in the Los Angeles area.
